For my first Othermill project, I did the Hello, World kit from Other Machine Company. This project came with the circuit board to mill (three pieces, which was good) and all the necessary electronics.
Materials & Resources
- Soldering iron and solder
- Wire clippers
- Single-sided FR-1 printed circuit board blank
- 47-ohm resistors (2)
- LEDs (2)
- Coin cell battery, 3-volt, CR2032
- Coin cell battery holder
- Double-sided sticky tape
- Eagle template
- The tutorial itself!
The biggest issue I ran into was positioning. The file is designed to fit should the cuts begin at the bottom left corner but when I uploaded it, the Otherplan thought the material was set in slightly from the edge, so my first board did not fit and I had to do it again. This cost me about an hour. Other than that, the mill was very straightforward to use and I am excited to make more projects on it.
I am excited to mill some wax, both for use as jewelry molds and as art pieces. I need to order more supplies and while I can create vector files from Sketch or Illustrator, I'd like to learn to use Fusion360 to create 3D models to mill.
